Roslyn Boys & Girls Club Celebrates 70th Anniversary
The year 2023 marks the 70th anniversary of the Roslyn Boys & Girls Club. At the time of its founding, the club provided a place for area youth to play football, baseball, softball, and soccer. The organization built a clubhouse to furnish a facility that could provide indoor activities, serve as a place where meetings could be held, and provide an area for storage. The facility was rebuilt following its devastation from Hurricane Fran in September 1996. Today, our sports program continues to flourish and has prospered. We offer quality baseball, basketball, soccer, and softball programs.
Additionally, we offer the Joseph Marsden Scholarship Fund to eligible high school graduates seeking to further their education. You can read about our most recent award recipients here. We also provide no-cost community events, including our annual Santa Night and Easter Egg Hunt. Our facilities are available to rent for your next event (learn more). And, as a non-profit, we are able to accept tax-deductible donations to help support our programs (donate now).
Thanks to the many volunteers who have supported us over the years as coaches, team parents, board members, and more. And, thanks to the many players who have participated in our sports programs. We could not do what we do without you!
Congratulations to 2022 Marsden Scholarship Recipients
Congratulations to Lucius Crump, Chloe King, Finnegan McClellan, and Nathaniel Shaw, recipients of the 2022 Marsden Scholarship awarded by the Roslyn Boys & Girls Club. We are proud of all of you, and we wish you the best for a successful future.
Lucius Crump, son of Erika Wines, is a senior at Abington Senior High School who describes himself as a dedicated, hard-working student. He aspires to pursue a career in marketing and will attend East Stroudsburg University in the fall, with plans to major in Business. He also hopes to continue to play football while in college. He played baseball for Roslyn Boys & Girls Club from 2009-2015, during which time he developed friendships and mentorship relationships while participating in club cleanup weekends, fundraising events, and other team related activities. In addition to his football exploits at Abington Senior High School, he has been employed at Old School Burger since eighth grade, has been a member of the VIBE/IMAGINE club since seventh grade, a member of the DECA Club, served as a youth basketball coach, and achieved perfect attendance in ninth grade. In addition to his school activities, he has been honored by the DECA club with its Emerging Leader Award. He has also been recognized for outstanding academic achievement all four years in high school. Lucius likes to read, travel, participate in community events, and play football.
Chloe King is one of five children of Justin and Kimberly King and is a senior at Calvary Christian Academy. She intends to become a Physician Assistant and will pursue a course of study at Saint Francis University in the fall. She played soccer and softball at Roslyn Boys & Girls Club for many years. At Calvary, she was a student government representative, was named to the honor roll all four years of high school, and received academic achievement awards in ninth and eleventh grades. She was also recognized as a scholar/athlete in grades 9, 11, and 12. Additionally, she worked at Fort Washington Estates as part of the wait staff throughout high school. At New Life Presbyterian Church (Dresher), she was a counselor for Kids in Motion, a part of the New Life youth group, and a volunteer at the New Life Respite Night. At Roslyn, she has been a snack shack volunteer during the baseball season and at the Jack Howarth Tournament. She likes to play softball and soccer, watch baseball, and ski. She is an avid reader and a die-hard Philly sports fan. One teacher describes Chloe as “a model student who shows responsibility and initiative. She is able to grasp concepts quickly and excels in the Chemistry lab.” Another said she is “a blessing to those around her, encouraging them, motivating them, and leading them as a team towards excellence.”
Finnegan McClellan is the son of Kevin and Jaimee McClellan and is a senior at Abington Senior High School. He plans to study Engineering at Temple University where he has been awarded a Conwell Scholarship. He exudes a love for math and science and achieved high honors in these subjects at ASHS. Finnegan played soccer from U-12 to U-19 at AC United and was also involved in many school activities during that time. He was a member of the National Honors Society throughout high school, was a member of the Alternative Sports Club from ninth through twelfth grade, and played soccer and baseball at the high school level. He was also involved as a camp counselor and worked as a day care provider at North Hills Country Club. He likes to snowboard, hike, fish, and play baseball and soccer. Additionally, he enjoys Anime, gaming, drawing and traveling. Finnegan was described by his Ceramics teacher as “a very artistic and creative student. He was a determined student, even during COVID-19 imposed virtual learning. He applied himself and was able to work independently.”
Nathaniel Shaw is the son of Timothy and Lauren Shaw. He is a senior at Abington Senior High School and will attend Penn State (University Park) where he has been accepted into the Smeal College of Business. He was a member of the National Honors Society throughout high school, as well as the recipient of the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, the President’s Volunteer Service Award, the Director’s Award for Orchestra, the Abington Service Award, and the Abington Community Taskforce Community Service Award. An accomplished violinist, he has studied with Jason DePue of the Philadelphia Orchestra, played in the ASHS Orchestra, and played in the MontCo Honors String Orchestra. As an athlete, he played on the ASHS varsity baseball team, serving as captain and receiving the Coaches Award his senior year; he also played fourteen years of baseball (tee-ball through American Legion) exclusively with Roslyn Boys & Girls Club. At New Life Presbyterian Church (Dresher), he served as a camp counselor, volunteered at Respite Night, and was active in the youth group throughout high school. The summer before his senior year, he served as an intern at Grounds for Restoration, a non-profit that supports anti-human trafficking efforts.
